What is conformal coating?

Conformal coating material is applied to electronic circuitry to act as protection against moisture, dust, chemicals, and temperature extremes that if uncoated (non-protected) could result in a complete failure of the electronic system.

Can conformal coatings improve reliability & reduce printed circuit board failures?

Current advances in pcb technology allow for denser populated boards with line spacing becoming increasingly smaller.  These closely packed components and traces are protected by less dielectric board material which can lead to corrosion, shorts and electro migration.  Conformal coating can add dielectric and mechanical strength which will greatly improve reliability.  Coatings will also protect against moisture and contaminates.

What types of materials are used?
There are different materials used for conformal coating such as Acrylic Resin, Epoxy Resin, Silicone Resin, Polyurethane Resin, and Parylene.  Protect-R-Shield is a modified one part, heat cured silicone.

Why use Protect-R-Shield conformal coating?
Protect-R-Shield provides outstanding protection from contaminants and the harsh effects of the environment.  Protect-R-Shield enhances the boards’ dielectric strength and provides stress relief from thermal shock, handling and installation.  Protect-R-Shield significantly improves reliability, performance and life of the LED board resulting in a competitive advantage to the manufacturer. Manufacturing efficiency has reduced the price of conformal coatings to give LED board and fixture manufactures all of these benefits at an affordable cost.  A considerable capital investment in Research and Development and state-of-the-art automated coating equipment has been made by Protect-R-Shield.

What are the benefits of Protect-R-Shield?
Excellent moisture protection including corrosive salt spray.

Protection from dust, corrosion, extreme temperatures, thermal shock (turning the LED's on/off in severe temperature conditions), contaminants  and severe environments.

Provides stress relief, insulation, and prevents damage to fragile LED's and electronic components during handling and installation.

Reduces the risk of premature failure which can greatly enhance the performance.

Patented one-part silicone base coating has proprietary non-yellowing properties.  Stays optically clear for the life of the LED. Outstanding thermal protection from -52°F to 400°F.PRS has been tested for IP-67 standards in the raw board form.

It has performed extremely well passing dielectric testing under these conditions.

What do the standards IP67 and IP68 stand for?
The Ingress Protection (IP) rating system is a classification system showing the degrees of protection from solid objects and liquids. The first number refers to the protection against solid objects and the second refers to protection against liquids.  IP67 =  6 - Dust tight. 7 - immersion in water up to 1m (Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). IP68 =  6 - Dust tight. 8 - immersion beyond 1 m (suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer).

What is the thickness of the coating?

IPC-CC-830 recommends between .05 - .21mm for silicone conformal coating.  Typically Protect-R-Shield is applied with a thickness between .05 and .08mm.  Different applications will determine the desired thickness.

What is the lumen loss when the coating is applied over the LED's?

Average lumen loss is between 1.5 - 2% depending on the type of LED.

Does Protect-R-Shield affect the CRI or CCT?

(CRI - Color Rendering Index; CCT - Coordinated Color Temperature) The CRI is slightly improved by an average of 2.  The CCT shifts slightly higher (cooler) by an average of 128 Kelvin which is virtually undetected by the human eye..

Is the operating temperature of the LED increased when coated?

NO.  The coating dissipates the forward heat that is given off.  The junction temperature (where the LED is mounted to the printed circuit board) does not change.

Will the coating be applied over the entire printed circuit board?

Protect-R-Shield is a selective, robotic controlled coating process. "Selective" means that the coating can be applied (or not applied) with great precision anywhere on the board. For instance, the specific spot where the board makes electrical contact with its power source obviously cannot be sealed.  With precision selective coating capability, a particular spot, area or component will not receive the coating and will be essentially "masked".

How is the LED board sealed after it is returned to us for installation?

Protect-R-Shield will supply a secondary silicone based product that is applied on the final assembly connection and bonds with Protect-R-Shield to make a complete sealed assembly.  This sealant is an air cured coating.

Does Protect-R-Shield have patented properties?
Yes. Protect-R-Shield has patented properties to keep the coating from yellowing for the life of the product.

How much does Protect-R-Shield cost?

There are a variety of considerations such as board size, configuration, volume, coating selectivity and thickness that have to be taken into account when determining the cost.  However, the cost is a very small percentage compared to the considerable investment of electronic printed circuit boards and their components. The Protect-R-Shield coating yields significant value-added protection and insurance for optimal performance and life.  Protect-R-Shield will review the customer’s specifications and submit a detailed quote.

Is Protect-R-Shield available to the International Market?

Yes. Protect-R-Shield is available to Domestic and International Markets.

Has Protect-R-Shield been tested?

Protect-R-Shield has been tested by Independent Laboratories that have been approved by the Department of Energy.  These environmental tests have been performed on a variety of different LED boards and all have passed.

Humidity Exposure – UL8750

Corrosion test / Salt Spray – UL50E

Water immersion – IEC 60529

Thermal shock – Rapidly changing temperature from -40°F to 300°F

Lumen Loss, CRI and CCT have also been independently tested.
